Type Locality and Naming

The naming section is located in the vicinity of Gaoyugou ~25 km northeast of Luanchuan County, and ~5 km northwest of Tantou Township, Henan. The reference section is located in the Zhutoupo-Yaoshang area ~3 km east of Tantou Township. Named by Tong Yongsheng and Wang Jingwen in 1980.


Lithology and Thickness

Mainly purplish red mudstone. The lower part is usually intercalated with conglomerate or consists of alternating mudstone and conglomerate. In the vicinity of East Zhutoupo, Tantou Township, it is represented by brownish red sandy mudstone and pebbly sandstone with conglomerate lenses. The thickness is about 300–366 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has a disconformable contact with the underlying Qiupa Fm (Cretaceous?)

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying Middle Paleocene Dazhang Fm.

Regional extent

This formation is distributed at Gaoyugou, Tanyugou, Zhutoupo and Wangzhuang in Luanchuan County and Xiliang and Manyu of Dazhang in Songxian County.

Fossils

Limited fossil species are found now in this formation, but according to its contained Bemalambda sp. and Mesonychids, their basic characters may broadly correlate with those of the early Paleocene Shanghu Formation in northern Guangdong.


Age 

Wang, Y.Q. et al. (2019; Paleogene integrated stratigraphy and timescale of China) show it as spanning the majority of the Danian.
